De 29-jarige Gilis was niet opgewassen tegen de 27-jarige Maleisische Sivasangari Subramaniam (PSA 6), het zesde reekshoofd. Die haalde het met 11-8, 11-7 en 11-8 na 41 minuten wedstrijd.

Later op de dag komt ook Neles zus Tinne Gilis (PSA 10) in actie. Zij treft als zevende reekshoofd in de eerste ronde de Egyptische Mariam Metwally (PSA 33).

Het Egyptische nummer 1 van de wereld Hania El Hammamy topt het deelnemersveld in Chicago.
