De wedstrijd in Casablanca eindigde na 90 minuten op 0-0. Daarna kwamen er geen verlengingen, maar meteen strafschoppen. In de penaltyreeks misten sterspelers Mo Salah en Omar Marmoush voor Egypte. Bij Nigeria ging enkel de eerste elfmeter van Fisayo Dele-Bashiru niet tegen de netten. Akor Adams, Moses Simon (ex-AA Gent), Alex Iwobi en Ademola Lookman troffen wel raak (4-2). Bij de Super Eagles stond Raphael Onyedika (Club Brugge) 90 minuten tussen de lijnen.
Het is voor Nigeria de negende bronzen medaille in 35 edities van de Afrika Cup. Het West-Afrikaanse land won het Afrikaans kampioenschap drie keer (1980, 1994 en 2013). Bij de vorige editie twee jaar geleden was Nigeria goed voor zilver.
Zondag (om 20 uur) spelen Senegal en gastland Marokko de finale van de Afrika Cup in Rabat. Beide landen strijden voor een tweede Afrikaanse titel. Senegal was de beste in 2021 in Kameroen, voor Marokko dateert de vorige eindzege al van 1976 in Ethiopië.
